The New Punks of St. Marks Place. →

Suvy came to St. Marks last year after hearing the street name-checked in a Casualties song. “[Other punks] think they know a few bands and that gives them the right to call themselves whatever they want and fucking run around and go back home to their white, suburban comfort zone,” hisses Greg, knowingly. But the irony is delicious: When I first met the Casualties in 1990, their well-off families and homes in New Jersey, Westchester, and uptown Manhattan were no secret. A great band, for sure, but perhaps not always as flawless as Suvy and Greg have mythologized. What will they think when they realize that most of us had homes back then?
